Founding father of Italian design and pioneer of the union between beauty and functionality in objects, but also painter, sculptor and architect: these are the many aspects of the personality of Ettore Sottsass (Innsbruck, 1917 ‒ Milan, 2007) that emerge from his retrospective at MET Breuer of New York.
On the centenary of his birth, the artist is celebrated with an exhibition that explores the evolution of his career from the first objects designed for Olivetti in the 1950s to his latest works of contemporary design, in which Sottsass draws inspiration from artists such as Piet Mondrian, Jean Michel Frank and Shiro Kuramata.
An evolution not only in time and style, but a real journey through incredibly varied places, materials and dimensions. Multifaceted from the beginning of his career, when he combined his first industrial designs with pictorial practice, Sottsass left little unexplored territory in his artistic career.
In addition to the works of Sottsass, space is left for products by designers contemporary to him, such as the Capitello by Studio 65.
