History

The LEONARDO sectional sofa, originally designed by Studio 65 founders Franco and Nanà Audrito, makes a statement in any setting. This versatile and modular sofa is a tribute to Americana, peaceful revolutions, and cultural shifts. The LEONARDO, with its stars and stripes finish and Vitruvian Man-inspired proportions, is more than a sofa – it’s a rich domestic sculpture that tells a story of freedom, independence, and historical moments.

First created in 1969 by Studio65 founders Franco and Nanà Audrito for their home office in Turin, the LEONARDO sectional sofa is a playful parody of the popular sofas of the 60s. In each of its versatile configurations, the LEONARDO is a tribute to the American flag, celebrating and deconstructing its symbolism, embodying both its positives and its negatives and the ups and downs of the 1970s. The sofa’s name, LEONARDO, is a nod to its composition, which recalls the proportions of Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man. In a home setting, LEONARDO focuses on the quintessentially American ideas of independence and freedom. It embodies the spirit of peaceful revolutions embodied by jazz, rock, the unbound freedom of Kerouac’s “On the Road,” and the camaraderie of the Hippie movement.

Structurally free and enhanced with Gufram’s special Guflac® finish, the sofa can be arranged according to your liking. This modularity references the Vitruvian Man and its ideal proportions. Two concentric circles within a square, marked by perpendicular and diagonal axes, encapsulate the sofa’s design. More than just a sofa; it is a content-rich domestic sculpture – a timeless reminder of the power of furniture to tell a story.
